When the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America were first formed, the majority of construction projects were built from wood. As the industry evolved, the building materials changed but the skills necessary to build with them did not. Today, the Northeast Carpenters represent one trade that includes many highly skilled crafts.
The Mill Cabinet segment is one such craft. Northeast Carpenter cabinet makers fabricate and install the decorative and functional elements of a project including cabinetry, fixtures, casino furniture like slot bases and pit stands, ornate panels for hotel lobbies, casinos and judge’s chambers, doors, windows, exposed columns and beams, trade show displays, office furniture, and much more. We identify their work and craftsmanship by looking for the Union Label stamped on every product.
The label of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America was adopted in 1902 and registered in 1903. The label indicates that the product was manufactured by our Mill Cabinet Brothers and Sisters working in Union shops throughout the country.
As members working under our commercial carpentry collective bargaining agreement we reserve “the right to recognize the existence of or non-existence of the label of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America on all materials, supplies and in equipment” which we install or assemble. When we exercise that right, we are working together to protect and capture more man hours for our signatory shops.
The success of this specialty craft relies heavily on the carpenters in the construction field who request the Union Label. Help your fellow Brothers and Sister secure more work opportunities by taking a moment to look for the Union Label when furniture or cabinetry is delivered to your next job site. If you know your project requires cabinetry and fixtures, contact your Council Representative to make them aware.
When we became Union carpenters, we took an oath to use every honorable means to help secure work for our fellow brothers and sisters. Recognizing the union label is one way we can do this.
