The Scholarship Sub-Committee of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters has established the guidelines for the eligibility, application, and awarding of scholarships for 2021. Applicants may fill out the online application form below. You will be able to upload a copy of your essay, proof of enrollment, and a copy of your transcript in the online form. Applications must be received by 5:00pm on Friday, April 16, 2021. Anything received after this time will not be accepted.
Applicants will be required to write an essay of between 500 and 1000 words on the following topic:
Examine the COVID-19 pandemic in America from the perspective of workers and unions. Discuss the role unions have played during the pandemic and evaluate their success. Are there systemic strengths or weaknesses related to labor and workers in America that have been revealed/highlighted by the pandemic? How can they be addressed? Are there lessons unions can learn from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic and its aftermath?
Note: Essays that do not meet the word count criteria will be disqualified. If you use outside references or sources please cite them.
To eliminate bias, the scholarship committee is blind to the identity of the applicant. Essays are numerically coded to prevent any reader from having knowledge of the writer. Winners of the top two prizes will be asked to read their essays at the June 2021 delegate meeting. Persons awarded first or second place in a prior year are ineligible for first or second place in subsequent years.
Please read the application guidelines and then fill out the online application.
