Welcome Carpenters Local #291

Summer is almost upon us and with that brings plenty for us to do.  We started this seasons Union Participation in March and we have already had some successes.  At Whole Foods in Colonie, we were able to turn around that project which would have gone to non-area standard contractors, but through the utilization of our job actions we were able to obtain the remainder of the work which included flooring, millwork, doors, hardware, cash wraps and setting of the cooler units.  We also have made an impact on the upcoming hotels in the area through the utilization of our bannering.  Home 2 Suites recently noticed our Shame On banners against Mike Hoffman and contacted us before they started the construction of their new hotel just off Wolf Rd.  The outcome was successful and we were able to get the framing and drywall package from a non-area standard contractor.  The Union Participation Program is also a very effective tool for obtaining work through town board meetings, political functions and community service projects.  When Carpenters show up in force, people take notice and we have the best and most active membership in all the building trades.  This is especially true when it comes time for us to negotiate Project Labor Agreements.  Our job actions have been able to catapult the amount of P.L.A.’s in this region due to the amount of labor unrest that is needed when a feasibility study is done to determine whether or not a P.L.A. should be warranted.  Again the Carpenters lead the way which in turn means more man hours and more market share.  Thank you to all our members who participate.

The summer also brings with it a time for our members to get together. Our annual clambakes in Albany and Plattsburgh will be coming before you know it.  Again, we welcome all members and their spouses and children to attend for a full day of food, fun, prizes, giveaways and activities for all.  Please contact the local office for dates and times.  We will also be sending out postcards as well with that information.  We look forward to seeing you all present.

From the entire Staff and Executive Board of Local #291 and the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, please have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Fraternally,
Mark Sowalski
